epoch #1 a roundel

the whale that fled
far from the life that this island led
can now be seen making waves
in history leaving its corpse ingrained
caught and brought to shore
by this simple fisherman
praised for small splashes
but its fossil will still be kept
as a sample on the cartographer's mantel
at the royal society backed up by
the life its led
the tears felt
also too the frustration
and divisiveness and happy pounamu smiles
that does seem to me to make a nation
of lead,  a will of steel and determination kept
by the sovereign's bed put there along with tears
that were wept by the whale that fled
